Getting Here
Basic directions from the Airport
If you rent a vehicle at the airport...
- Exit the airport turning left and head west through Managua. You are on Caraterra Norte- the main road through the outskirts of Managua. Stay on it.
- The road dead ends into the new Leon/Managua Hwy.
- Veer right and head north until the road dead ends.
- Turn left onto the old Leon/Managua Hwy. It will get very bumpy- be careful. About 15min later, you see the first- and only- gas station.
- Turn right at the gas station and follow the very bumpy road until you start to see homes. There is a large billboard of Daniel Ortega on the right.
- At the billboard take a left on the only road available. It is brick. This road heads into Miramar- about 2 miles and a 10 minute drive.
- Drive approx. one half mile and take your first right. Drive on the sides of the road to avoid water and mud or you may get stuck.
- Drive approx. one half mile to the first left (before the road curves to the right)
- Continue on for about one half mile to the camp. It is a red house with a red gate. The lights will be on and we will be looking forward to your arrival.
As a special note:
We are about two hours from the Managua airport. Some of my guests arrange for me to take a bus to the airport and meet their flights to guide them directly to the camp if they are renting their own vvehicle. My charge is $50 and you may consider it a very worthwhile investment if you are the least bit unsure of traveling in Nicaragua. The sun goes down every evening at 6:00 p.m. and rises every morning at 6:00 a.m. Depending on how long it takes you to get your luggage and pick up your rental, you may be traveling for some time in the dark on unfamiliar roads. There are few places to stop for directions or help. I offer this service to make your trip more enjoyable. Please let me know if you would like me to meet you at the baggage area at the airport.
Helpful Hints
- Suggest you pay the extra for a damage waiver.
- At the airport, you can purchase a moviestar cell phone for $17us. Put $10 on it and you can call the states while here. If not, it may cost you $7/minute.
- Wear your seatbelt for the police. And be respectful. They tend to ticket you for any infraction although you can pay a fine on the spot and avoid a summons. Save your money.
- Recommend you rent a car or 4-wheel drive truck. If you provide the transportation, I can take you to any of 16 different breaks, which is included in the price of your stay. You pay for the gas and I'll put you on the waves. All but one break is accessible by 4x4 and the one only accessible by boat is a 10 min boat ride from the camp. The boat rental is not included in the price of your stay. The going rate in Central Nica is $20us per hour. On a good day its a 200 yd left with 2 barrel sections.
